If you are a photographer, I probably don’t need to remind you what tends to happen when we get on the other side of the camera. It’s as if our brain just decided to take a quick vacation and every posing tip, prompt, and direction goes out the window! After struggling with this for far too long, I’ve decided to create a go-to list for a photographer’s headshots. Here are at least 9 new and creative poses for a photographer’s headshots that you can tuck away and save for inspiration in your next portrait session!
As hard as it is not to, don’t overthink it! Use your camera in ways that come naturally, and then find ways to include it in different natural movements from there.
This is the perfect one to begin with because everyone’s always wondering, what do I do with my hands?! Well to start with, just put a camera in one hand and let it hang there. Then continue to switch things up by adjusting your feet, creating different tilts of your head, different angles with your body, etc. It can be just as simple as that!
I love this one because it’s such a natural thing to be doing as a photographer. Don’t forget to think about how you might feel after getting “that perfect shot” or the joy you feel when you’re creating. Shoot this as a profile or even straight-on! If you are the one taking the headshots, you could even change the perspective and look over the photogs shoulder, catching a glimpse of what they’re reviewing!
People want to see you! But they also love to see you happy with what you do. Whether sitting, standing leaning, bend that elbow and bring that camera right up alongside that grin!
Even when I’m not photographing a session, I tend to view the world how my viewfinder might find it. Sometimes when the light is perfect or the composition unmatched, how often do we wish we had our camera in hand?
Find different ways to love up on your camera because, without it, where would we be?! I’ve been an extremely happy Canon user for the entirety of my professional career and have no quips with my Canon 5d Mark IV. This baby has served me and my clients well and has been a fabulous partner in crime, it deserves a little adoration.
Whether you’re a viewfinder or live view photog, there are plenty of ways to get creative recreating how you would use your camera!
Find different ways to highlight the camera as your main focus and subject. Let it fall across your lap, cradle it in front of your torso, or hold it above your head with a blank canvas behind so it really pops!
Have fun and don’t be afraid to play. Dance, scream, laugh + move (all the while taking good care of that camera body of course)!
Don’t forget to just be yourself away from the camera as well. Wear the hats you live in all winter or the type of sunglasses that you can’t go anywhere without. Don’t forget that if you don’t feel comfortable and like yourself, it’s going to read all over your face!
Branding and headshot sessions have quickly become some of my favorites! Don’t hesitate to reach out here, and let’s connect about planning your branding or headshot session!
